Interstate 8 / Araby Road Traffic Interchange
Improvement Project

The Arizona Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration have identified necessary improvements to the I-8 / Araby Road traffic interchange (TI) to relieve the existing and projected traffic congestion concerns in the area. The project team is planning and designing improvements for the I-8 / Araby Road TI. The improvements will be designed and constructed using Highway Safety Improvement Program funds.

Roundabouts Provide a Feasible Solution to Capacity Needs

With the construction of roundabouts, capacity can be added without requiring costly I-8 / Araby Road TI reconstruction and substantial impacts to adjacent properties.

No new Right-of-Way will be needed to accomodate the new modern roundabout improvements.

Roundabout Plan Expected to Improve Traffic Operations

ADOT and FHWA are developing a roundabout plan to improve traffic operations at the I-8 / Araby Road TI and accommodate future growth. A comprehensive traffic study determined the use of roundabouts would be the best choice to meet traffic needs well into the future.

Modern roundabouts provide a better solution over signalized intersections because they are safer and more efficient.

These roundabouts will be specifically designed to accomodate large commercial trucks, agricultural equipment and RVs. Several area trucking and agriculture stakeholders have contributed feedback and input on the design of the roundabouts to ensure the largest trucks can navigate through the interchange roundabouts.

The improvements were presented at a public meeting held in May 2013. Since then, the city of Yuma, Yuma County and the Yuma Metropolitan Planning Organization (YMPO) have expressed their support for the roundabout improvements at the I-8 / Araby Road TI.

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2017.
