The Arizona Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, is designing the Interim Phase II section of State Route 24 (SR 24) “Gateway Freeway.” This section of SR 24 will include approximately 5 miles of new freeway beginning at Ellsworth Road and ending at Ironwood Drive in Maricopa and Pinal counties.
Phase II of SR 24 follows the completion of Phase I in 2014 which opened a segment of SR 24 between the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and Ellsworth Road. The Interim Phase II of SR 24 is in the final design stage with construction anticipated to begin in 2020.
Since the ultimate build-out of SR 24 freeway is not anticipated until Phase V of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan, ADOT and FHWA have planned for an interim roadway that would help serve the transportation needs of the region until additional funding is available. The interim roadway would preserve the access control plan for this corridor outlined in the 2011 Design Concept Report, and be built at- or above grade throughout. The SR 24 Interim Phase II Final Design project will utilize a design-bid-build method of delivery.
Features of the new roadway will include:
- Constructing two paved lanes for each direction of travel separated by a graded median.
- Constructing at-grade intersections at Ellsworth, Williams Field and Meridian roads and Ironwood Drive.
- Constructing the ultimate drainage channel on the north side of the freeway.
- Installing signage, signalization, lighting and pavement marking, as necessary.
