The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is a multi-modal transportation agency that is responsible for planning, building, operating and maintaining a complex highway system in addition to providing motor vehicle services. ADOT also ensures the safe and efficient movement of people, goods and services throughout Arizona while promoting compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and regulations through the Enforcement and Compliance Division. ADOT moreover operates and maintains the Grand Canyon Airport and publishes the award-winning Arizona Highways magazine. ECD Full Authority Officer Recruit

The ECD recruit position is a statewide assignment. Individuals are assigned duty location based on the needs of the Arizona Department of Transportation. Occasional overtime and overnight travel may be required. The incumbent will be assigned to one of three shifts and may be rotated, as necessary. Chosen candidates must successfully meet all AZPOST certification requirements. Upon successful completion of training and certification as a peace officer and completion of probation, the incumbent is promoted to the ECD full-authority field officer position.

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona class D driver license. Candidates for this position must complete and sign the Driver Form on page 6 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, permitting ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.

Experience and Education

Qualified candidates must have a high school diploma or a successfully completed General Education Development (GED) examination. High school education must be noted on the candidate's resume to receive appropriate credit.

Special Selection Factors

Prior to attending a police academy and/or receiving Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification, a candidate must meet these minimum qualifications:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at the time of AZPOST academy graduation
  • Must successfully pass a complete background investigation, medical examination and polygraph examination that meets the standards of AZPOST
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony (or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona)
  • Must meet all other AZPOST minimum qualifications prior to appointment or attending an academy
  • Must have successfully completed the physical agility test
  • Must successfully complete the examination process
  • May be required to undergo a psychological examination

Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test

Fitness Event Requirement
99-Yard Obstacle Course Run a 99-yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb height obstacles, and a 34-inch high obstacle that must be vaulted.
Body Drag Lift and drag 165-pound, lifelike dummy 32 feet.
Chain-Link Fence Run five yards to a six-foot, chain-link fence, climb over fence, continue running another 25 yards.
Solid Fence Climb Run five yards to a six-foot solid fence, climb over fence, continue running another 25 yards.
500-Yard Run Run 500 yards (equivalent to one lap plus 60 yards of a standard running track).

Written Test / Requirements

The written test is made up of four separately timed test sections assessing basic proficiency in arithmetic, reading comprehension, grammar and incident report writing.  The first three sections use multiple-choice and true/false response formats.  The incident report writing section requires the ability to write accurate answers in complete sentences.
