The Arizona Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin construction of the raised median project on SR 92 in Sierra Vista and associated access mitigation projects in August 2013.
ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration studied options for enhancing the safety of motorists on SR 92 between Glenn Road / Kachina Trail and Canyon de Flores, a commercial district that is experiencing an increase in left-turn accidents with the addition of new businesses and growing traffic volumes.
After considering numerous options and exploring alternatives proposed by members of the community, the study team determined the installation of raised medians to restrict left-turn access into businesses is the appropriate approach. In response to concerns about access for motorists, including commercial trucks, ADOT is working with the city of Sierra Vista on local projects to create a truck turnaround and to connect local streets to improve access to businesses in the area.
The $2.98 million project, awarded to KE&G Construction of Sierra Vista, is expected to be compete in six months.
