A project to widen and repave a 1.3-mile segment of US 191 in Chinle began July 2013. Construction was suspended for the winter and now will restart April 28, 2014. The project starts in the area of Chinle High School and extends south through town. The $3.6 million project will include widening and resurfacing the roadway; constructing the sidewalks, curb and gutter; and installing new street lights. The project will be completed mid-summer 2014.
Most of the widening and sidewalk removal and some of the paving were completed before the project was shut down for the winter. Once the project restarts, work hours will be from sunrise to sunset, Monday through Friday. Business and driveway access will be maintained during construction, and efforts will be made to minimize impacts to adjacent businesses and properties. One lane of traffic will remain open at all times. Traffic lanes will be narrowed, and the speed limit will be reduced through the work zone.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect this project schedule.
