Interstate 17 and JW Powell Traffic Interchange Improvements

In spring 2014, the Arizona Department of Transportation will start a realignment and intersection improvement project approximately three miles south of Flagstaff that will reconstruct the interchange at I-17 and JW Powell Boulevard.

The improvement project will realign State Route 89A / Beulah Boulevard in the vicinity of Fort Tuthill County Park and construct two roundabouts, one at the entrance of the park and the other at the I-17 southbound ramps, to provide a safer transition for traffic through the intersections.

As part of this safety improvement project, ADOT recently thinned trees in the project's area in advance of the project's construction.

ADOT worked closely with Coconino County, city of Flagstaff and the local utility company to save as many trees as possible and only eliminated trees that were absolutely necessary. The project area will be reseeded upon completion.

A recent ADOT blog post and video (above) explains the project and the reuse of the thinned trees. For more information about this project, please call the ADOT Project Hotline at 855.712.8530 or email at projects@azdot.gov.
