| The following is the result of changes to Arizona law effective August 22, 2002.
Failure To Stop – If you are a driver involved in an accident where
there is damage to a vehicle, injury or death, you are required by law to stop your vehicle at
the scene of the accident, or as close as possible and immediately return to the scene. You must
remain at the scene to:
- Provide aid to any injured person, including making arrangements for medical treatment
- Provide your name, address and license plate number
- If requested, show your driver license to any person involved.
Conviction for failure to comply will result in your driving privilege being:
- Revoked for 5 years if involving death or serious physical injury
- Revoked for 3 years if involving injury other than death or serious physical injury
- Suspended for 1 year if involving only damage to a vehicle.
Drag Racing – The penalties for drag racing have increased.
In addition to a one year revocation of your driving privilege:
If you are convicted of a first violation for drag racing you will be charged with a Class 1 Misdemeanor and be required to pay a fine of not less than $250 and may be ordered by the court to perform community service.
If convicted of a two or more violations within 24 months, you will be charged with a Felony and the fine increases to no less than $500, possible community service and your driving privilege will be revoked for one year.
Motorcycle Safety Program – The responsibility for the administration of the Motorcycle Safety Program was transferred to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, www.azgohs.gov, 602-255-3216.
Seat Belts – Requires the driver of a vehicle to ensure any passenger under 16 years of age uses a lap and shoulder belt in passenger vehicles designed for 10 or fewer passengers and manufactured no earlier than 1972. If the shoulder harness is not installed, the lap belt must be properly adjusted and fastened. (Previously applied only to the front seat.)
