The Arizona State Rail Plan (Draft 2010)

The Arizona State Rail Plan draft is one piece of a larger multimodal planning framework for the State of Arizona. This document presents a series of issues and opportunities relative to the future of rail development in Arizona, including a series of implementation directions and a discussion on funding options.

Rail Framework Study (2010)

As part of the Statewide Transportation Planning Framework, the Statewide Rail Framework Study formulates a rail development program and investment strategy for the State of Arizona to promote the development of healthy and sustainable multimodal transportation system for people and goods. It addresses rail transportation needs across Arizona. The Study considered existing conditions and estimated future needs for both freight rail and passenger rail, with the latter including potential intercity and commuter service. To meet identified needs for improvements to the existing rail system, recommended programs and projects are identified. Improvement projects may consist of modifications to existing systems or the establishment of new facilities and services. This study becomes the rail component of the Statewide Transportation Planning Framework.

Arizona Rail Safety and Security Resource Guide (2008)

The guide focuses on targeted areas of railroad safety with emphasis on data driven, state specific needs identified by the "USDOT Highway-Rail Crossing Safety and Trespass Prevention Action Plan" developed by the United States Department of Transportation. The guide promotes rail safety to reduce the number of highway-rail grade crossing and trespassing incidents within the state and includes best practices in rail safety and security including engineering design improvements, public education and law enforcement.

State of Arizona Railroad Inventory & Assessment (2007) Assessment Cover Page

The Arizona Department of Transportation retained R.L. Banks and Associates to develop the State of Arizona 2007 Railroad Inventory and Assessment. The purpose of this effort was to provide an overview of the current existing rail network of Arizona railroads as they exist today. This includes all Class I, short line, mining, terminal/switching and tourist railroad operations. This is the first such railroad inventory for the State of Arizona since 2000. The results of this study will be included in MAG's upcoming commuter rail study in 2007-2008.
