Sunset Point Memorial

Honoring ADOT Employees

                Sunset Point Memorial

Beautiful faces are they that wear
The light of a pleasant spirit there;
Beautiful hands are they that do
Deeds that are noble good and true;
Beautiful feet are they that go
Swiftly to lighten another's woe.

Friends caring about friends. This is what the Arizona Department of Transportation Monument is about. Many people at ADOT felt a need to honor their friends and coworkers killed in the line of duty and so the ADOT Monument was conceived. However, it was through the consistent efforts of the Monument Team and the support of others in the ADOT family, that the idea became a reality.

The monument is a sundial featuring a plaque inscribed with the names of our fallen friends. In a contest sponsored by the Department, family members and employees submitted ideas. An entry by Ed Corral, former landscape architect in ADOT's Roadside Development Section, was chosen as the most appropriate. Federal Enhancement Funds from the Federal Highway Administration provided the majority of the funding in addition to ADOT employees making a significant contribution to this endeavor.

The popular and centrally located Sunset Point Rest Area was chosen as the site on which to build the monument. It was selected to provide maximum visibility and to encourage the motoring public to recognize the hazards ADOT employees face on a day to day basis.

Susent Point Memorial

Geologic time has proven its worth by creating this beautiful backdrop of the Bradshaw Mountains with it's unique high desert landscaping. It is an area that one can witness life growing and breathing all around them - an absolutely breathtaking sight.

A great amount of love and compassion went into this project and it has become a symbol of how much we care for our friends.
