Interstate 17 (Black Canyon Freeway), the first interstate
highway to be built through the Valley, forms the north-south backbone
of the freeway system.
Interstate 17 south of Loop 101 carries
a steady stream of traffic through the urban core before
terminating at the I-10/I-17 Split in south-central Phoenix.
