Anyone may nominate a road for local and/or national designation! The designation pages of this Web site provides guidance to assist interested applicants in the nomination process.

Local Designation
This applies for scenic roads sponsored by ADOT. It applies
to Parkways, Historic and Scenic Roads. The process is outlined
in the ADOT report Application Procedures for Designation
of Parkways, Historic and Scenic Roads in Arizona. The
highlights of this report are described on the Web pages below:
- Application Components
It all starts with a letter requesting designating; accompanied by a formal application.
- Evaluation Criteria
This covers how the formal application will be reviewed by Parkways, Historic and Scenic Roads Advisory Committee. Specific criteria is involved separately for Parkways, for Historic Roads, and for Scenic Roads.
- Parkways, Historic and Scenic Roads Advisory Committee
This committee evaluates designation requests based on the established criteria.
- Guidelines and Rules
After the designation and approval of the new scenic road, these apply to the highway to preserve the designation.
National Designation
This process applies for scenic roads sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It applies to National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads.
- National Scenic Byways
These byways offer significant qualities that must be recognized throughout the multi-state region.
- All-American Roads
These scenic roads are not only significant nationally,
but also contain one-of-a-kind features that do not exist
elsewhere.
