National Scenic Byways Grants Program
National Scenic Byways grants are available as discretionary funds to undertake eligible projects along highways designated as National Scenic Byways, All-American Roads, or as State-designated scenic byways. Eligible activities include, among others, corridor management plans, byway facilities and resource protection.
The Transportation Enhancement/Scenic Roads Section was selected as a recipient of National Scenic Byways Grant from the second and final round of Scenic Byways grants for FY 2004 byways funds. Entitled "Sky Island Parkway FIRE (Forest, Inferno, Renewal, Education) Interpretative Project", the ADOT request was for $295,900. The project calls for a five-part interpretation of the fire that devastated Mount Lemmon in 2003, and its effect on the Sky Island Scenic Byway. Project elements will include:
 |
• Interpretive Signs at Vista Points and other Special Sites
• Scenic Byway and Special Interest Brochures
• FIRE Video
• Scenic Byway Driving Tour
• FIRE Elementary Education Program
The ADOT Transportation Enhancement-Scenic Roads Section is pleased to invite Arizona’s Scenic Byways community to submit Grant Applications for FY07 scenic byway funds.
|
The grant application will be posted online at www.bywaysonline.org/grants the first week in December 2006, with a deadline date to ADOT’s Scenic Byway Coordinator of February 20, 2007. These funds, administered by the Arizona Department of Transportation, have the potential to bring numerous tourism-related improvements across the State. Some of these improvements will enable communities to nominate their byways as National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads. The National Scenic Byway and All-American Road designations were established as part of the National Scenic Byways Program as a way to increase tourism, stimulate local economies and protect distinctive assets along byways in addition to identifying the country’s most scenic and historically significant roads.
