Designation
There are two types of designation: local and national. Local designation includes the establishment of Parkways, Historic and Scenic Roads within the state. National designation includes the establishment of National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads.
Local designation was authorized by ARS 41-512 through ARS 41-518 enacted in 1982. ADOT is the agency responsible to implement these laws. Presently, there are 24 Parkways, Historic and Scenic Roads designated in Arizona.
National designation for the National Scenic Byways Program was authorized under the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991, and reauthorized in 1998 under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. There are 126 such designated byways in 44 states. In Arizona, there is five national designations: One All-American Road and four National Scenic Byways.
Anyone may nominate a road for local and/or national designation! The Designation pages of this website provides guidance to assist interested applicants in the nomination process.
