The Arizona Department of Transportation began constructing roadway improvements in December 2011 along State Route 86 (also referred to as Ajo Highway). The four-mile road improvement project along State Route 86 extends west of Robles Junction and between San Pedro and Viopuli Road (MP 137 and MP 141) on the Tohono O'odham Nation.

As part of ADOT's continued investment along SR 86, this $6 million project is expected to be completed by fall 2012.

SR 86 serves as a regional transportation route between Tucson and south-central Arizona. The state highway accesses the Tohono O'odham Nation and is the only highway that serves as part of a connection of roadways in southeastern Arizona and Mexico that reach the popular tourist destination in Mexico called Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point.

PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS

• Adding expanded paved shoulders and safety slopes on both sides of the existing roadway
• Adding left-turn lanes at San Pedro Road
• Enhancing 13 major drainage structures and 14 minor drainage structures
• Adjusting pavement elevations on 2 curves to enhance safety
• Applying new pavement to create a smooth driving surface
