Overnight bridge work on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction next week

Highway closed up to 15 minutes intermittently Sunday through Wednesday nights

The following late night closures and restrictions will be in place on Interstate 17 at Cordes Junction next week as crews work on the new southbound bridge over Big Bug Creek, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation:

Early Monday Morning, October 1:

  • Alternating lane restrictions on southbound I-17, a left lane restriction northbound I-17, and intermittent full closures up to 15 minutes between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to allow crews to maneuver a large crane into place that will be used to unload concrete girders.

Monday night, October 1

  •  Southbound I-17 will be closed intermittently for up to 15 minutes between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to allow crews to place concrete girders on the new bridge over Big Bug Creek.
  • Alternating lane restrictions on southbound I-17 and a left lane restriction on northbound I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to allow trucks to unload concrete girders and enter and exit the highway.
  • Crews will work on an electrical crossing across Stagecoach Drive in Cordes Lakes between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. which will require a lane restriction. Drivers will be directed through the work zone in alternating directions. Minimal delays are expected.

Tuesday, October 2:

  • Alternating lane restrictions on southbound I-17 and southbound I-17 closed intermittently up to 15 minutes between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to allow crews to place concrete girders on the new bridge over Big Bug Creek.
  • Northbound traffic on I-17 will be required exit at Cordes Junction and follow a detour to Stagecoach Drive and then to the Arcosanti traffic interchange between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. to allow crews to work on the bridge over I-17.
  • Drivers heading southbound on I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. will be required to exit at the Arcosanti off-ramp and then use State Route 69 to gain access to southbound I-17 as crews work on the bridge over I-17.

Wednesday, October 3:

  • Alternating lane restrictions on southbound I-17, a left lane restriction northbound I-17, and intermittent full closures up to 15 minutes between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to allow crews to place concrete girders on the new bridge over Big Bug creek. 

Thursday, October 4:

  • Right lane closures on northbound and southbound I-17 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. as crews restripe the roadway.

Drivers are encouraged to adjust their travel schedules in order to avoid the closures during those hours or allow extra travel time.

The work is part of a $50 million project to reconstruct the I-17/State Route 69 traffic interchange.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
