I-10 (Junction I-8 to Tangerine Road) Study

The Arizona Department of Transportation conducted a study of long-term improvements for over 44 miles of Interstate 10, between Interstate 8 at milepost 196 in Casa Grande and Tangerine Road at milepost 240 in Marana. The goal of the study was to establish a long-range plan to accommodate future traffic projects and establish a framework for future improvement projects as traffic volumes increase.

STUDY CRITERIA AND SCHEDULE
Expand / Collapse.

The Study Evaluated:

  • Highway deficiencies
  • Freight mobility
  • Frontage roads
  • Traffic interchanges
  • Drainage features
  • Environmental issues

Study Schedule and Progress:

  • The study began in spring 2006 and was completed in March 2011
  • The study followed the National Environmental Policy Act process to evaluate alternatives for improvements and document potential impacts to the social, natural and cultural environment
  • The study identified and incorporated environmental mitigation measures into future I-10 improvements
  • The study team met with, received and incorporated comments from the public and stakeholders
  • An Access Management Plan, Design Concept Report and proposed preferred long-range plan were developed
STUDY SEGMENTS:
Expand / Collapse.

10/I-8 Interchange Area (MP 198 to MP 201)

  • Preliminary design proposes high-speed directional ramps connecting the two interstate highways.
  • A new interchange is proposed at I-10 and Selma Highway (MP 197), and ramps would be removed that currently connect Jimmie Kerr Boulevard to I-10. Traffic from Jimmie Kerr Boulevard would access I-10 by using a frontage road that would connect to Selma Highway.
  • The Sunland Gin Road interchange (MP 200) is recommended to be relocated about a quarter-mile southeast of its existing location, and the relocated Sunland Gin Road/Overfield Road corridor has been planned by local jurisdictions to become a roadway of regional importance linking Arizona City to Coolidge.
  • The I-10/I-8 interchange has been planned to accommodate a potential new interchange along I-8 at Henness Road.
  • View detailed information of the I-10/I-8 Interchange Proposed Design.

I-10 Alignment through the Community of Picacho (MP 210 to MP 213)

  • Three options were presented at public meetings held throughout the corridor in May 2007, and comments from the public were received for review and consideration. After further study, discussion and input, the project team is recommending a preferred alternative which includes a realignment of the freeway through the community of Picacho.
  • The advantages of the preferred alternative include:
    • Reducing the number of freeway curves and improving traffic flow along I-10.
    • Removing existing embankment to improve the visual aspects of the freeway.
    • Relocating the freeway along the railroad mainline, consolidating a major freeway and major railroad into one corridor.
    • Reduction of noise levels in areas of Picacho located south of the freeway.
  • The realignment will be constructed as a separate project from the I-10 Corridor Study.
  • Reconstruction of the SR 87 interchange could be scheduled with freeway realignment.
  • View detailed information of the I-10 Alignment through the Community of Picacho.
  • Realigning and widening the freeway to three lanes in each direction through the community of Picacho would be done as part of an interim-widening project from State Route (SR) 87 to Picacho Peak Road. Please see the Related Projects section for further details on interim widening projects throughout the corridor.
