Update: Two-week lane closure on eastbound Interstate 10 frontage road at Prince Road in Tucson rescheduled for Wednesday (August 24) to Wednesday (September 7)

The Arizona Department of Transportation has postponed the right lane closure of the eastbound I-10 frontage road to next week. Originally, the lane closure was scheduled to begin today (Monday, August 15) through Friday (August 26). The lane closure, which will take place approximately 500 feet north of Prince Road for 24 hours a day, will now begin at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday (August 24) and end at 4 p.m. on Wednesday (September 7). The schedule change is due to revised utility work plans.
The closure will allow for utility work involving the installation of a new 8-inch natural gas line to replace an existing 4-inch line and is part of the upcoming construction to widen Interstate 10 between Ruthrauff Road and Prince Road in Tucson.
Some of the improvements that are planned as part of this project include:
- Widening the I-10 freeway to four lanes in each direction to accommodate increasing congestion and traffic.
- Reconstructing the Prince Road traffic interchange so that Prince Road will pass over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and I-10 and minimize delays for motorists.
- Updating the entrance and exit ramps to provide better connections and improved access.
- New landscaping along the project area.
Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2011 and last approximately 26 months. As part of the project, the Prince Road underpass and ramps will close no sooner than November 2011 and will remain closed until the project is scheduled to be completed by early winter 2013.
The construction schedule is subject to change due to a variety of reasons, including weather, material availability and mechanical difficulties. ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
