The Arizona Department of Transportation has scheduled lane closures in both directions of Interstate 10 at the State Route 90 traffic interchange near Benson this week and next for the continued removal of pavement from the old traffic lanes and the construction of new eastbound lanes.
Rain early this week has changed the schedule for removing the old westbound lanes of I-10 in the project area and requires paving work on the new eastbound lanes each day from Wednesday (December 14) through Thursday (December 22) to keep the $27.6 million project on schedule.
Motorists traveling in the Benson area can now expect the following lane closures:
- Westbound left lane of I-10 approaching Ocotillo Road (Exit 304) from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday (December 14) and Thursday (December 15).
- Eastbound left lane of I-10 beginning one mile west of the junction with State Route 90 (Exit 302) each day from Wednesday (December 14) through Thursday (December 22) – including the weekend – from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The westbound I-10 closure will allow trucks to enter the median where crews are removing asphalt from the old westbound lanes safely. The lanes are no longer in use now that traffic is using a newly constructed section of westbound I-10 west of SR 90.
The eastbound closure will provide safe entrance back onto I-10 for trucks leaving the work area..
The newly constructed section of westbound I-10 and the lanes to be constructed for eastbound traffic will eliminates sweeping curves in the interstate west of Benson.
With rain forecast for much of the coming week, ADOT will continue to provide updates with any further changes to the work schedule.
ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
