ADOT to move into new phase of State Route 90 widening near Interstate 10 interchange project

Motorists on SR 90 to use newly reconstructed westbound lanes starting next week

August 23, 2012

Motorists on State Route 90 in Benson will begin using the newly widened westbound lanes between Village Loop Drive and the interchange with Interstate 10 on Tuesday morning.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is midway through work to widen that segment of SR 90 from four lanes to seven lanes as part of the $27.6 million project that includes replacing the I-10 overpass bridge and realigning a segment of curves west of the interchange.

With work on the westbound lanes nearing completion, ADOT will move all SR 90 traffic onto the newly constructed lanes beginning at approximately 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28. One lane will be open for traffic in each direction in the work area, with the posted speed limit reduced to 15 mph approaching the interstate.

The switch will allow crews to begin work on widening the eastbound lanes, a project that is scheduled for completion in late fall 2012.

The opening of the reconstructed westbound lanes will allow access to businesses east of the highway at three locations, including the signal at Village Loop Drive. During the work to reconstruct the eastbound lanes, the only access to businesses west of SR 90 will be at Village Loop Drive.

When the widening of SR 90 is complete, traffic signals will be installed to control access to I-10.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
