Lane closures on Interstate 10 at State Route 90 junction near Benson beginning Monday

July 28, 2011

SAFFORD — Lane closures will be in effect on Interstate 10 near the traffic interchange at State Route 90 in Cochise County early next week to allow asphalt trucks to enter and exit the construction area as the Arizona Department of Transportation continues work to replace the interchange and construct new westbound lanes.

Monday (August 1) from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • The right lane of westbound I-10 will be closed for one mile beginning west of SR 90.

Tuesday (Augist 2) from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • The right lane of westbound I-10 will be closed for one mile beginning two miles east of SR 90.
  • The westbound I-10 entrance ramp at State Route 80 will be closed.
  • The westbound I-10 entrance and exit ramp at State Route 90 will remain open.

The following detour will be available Tuesday:
Motorists traveling westbound on SR 80 who wish to travel on westbound I-10 must take eastbound I-10 and exit at Ocotillo Road (Exit 304) to enter westbound I-10.

During both of these lane closures, the posted speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph and oversized loads of 14-feet in width will be restricted.

These closures will allow safe access for trucks carrying asphalt for the new westbound lanes of I-10, which are being constructed to eliminate a curving section of the interstate west of SR 90.

The work is part of a two-year, $27.6 million ADOT project that is expected to be completed by early 2012.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
