SAFFORD- State Route 90 at the interchange with Interstate 10 near Benson will be restricted to one lane for both directions beginning 7 a.m. Monday (April 11) through Thursday (April 28) while the Arizona Department of Transportation lowers the highway in preparation for replacing the overpass bridge.
What to expect during the lane closure:
- Lane restrictions will be in place 24 hours a day
- ADOT workers will direct traffic through the underpass
- The speed limit will be 25 miles per hour through the construction area
- The right-turn lane for northbound vehicles to enter eastbound I-10 will not be interrupted for motorists.
- Motorists traveling north on SR 90 can expect delays of up to five minutes.
During this closure, ADOT will replace the section of SR 90 that is beneath the overpass with a new road that will be three feet lower than the current one. Sometime in the next year, the same section of highway will be lowered three additional feet in preparation for the construction of a new I-10 overpass at the interchange. The lowering of the roadway, designed to provide greater clearance beneath the new overpass, is being done in phases to coordinate with upcoming work immediately south on SR 90 and to maintain appropriate visibility for drivers.
The work is part of the on-going $27.6 million ADOT project to replace the traffic interchange at I-10 and SR 90 (Exit 302), straighten curves in the highway west of the interchange and make improvements to SR 90.
ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
