Construction Alert: Drive Safely on US Route 191
June 3, 2008
TUCSON - The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is reminding drivers to be alert and drive safely on US Route 191. With two major construction projects underway on US 191, ADOT asks drivers to use caution, watch for construction personnel and public safety officers and to obey all posted speed limit signs and detour routes while traveling through construction areas.
“With school out and increased vacation travel, we want to thank our friends in the Gila Valley and Clifton/Morenci areas for keeping safety and courtesy at the top of their minds,” says Tom Engel, ADOT’s Safford District maintenance engineer.
At the intersection of US 191 with State Routes 75 and 78, the Guthrie Bridge is being constructed north of the Gila Valley. Speed limits have been reduced to 35 mph in the construction zone and lane widths are restricted. Steep grades and the presence of construction crews and trucks make it especially important for drivers to use caution and to be alert. The anticipated date of this project’s completion is April 2009.
South of the Gila River Valley, on US 191 between Interstate 10 and State Route 266, a three-mile segment of two-lane road is being widened to a four-lane divided highway. Concrete barriers have been placed along the road edge to ensure the safety of working crews and drivers. Drivers are asked to obey the posted speed limit of 55 mph throughout this area and to watch for intermittent speed reductions when there are lane closures. This project is expected to continue through the winter of 2008.
