Temporary Suspension of Operations
at 13 Rest Areas Statewide
As part of a series of actions to address current budget constraints, and in an ongoing effort to preserve the most critical services and safety measures for the traveling public, the Arizona Department of Transporation (ADOT) is temporarily suspending operations at 13 of its 18 rest areas beginning the week of October 19.
Safety is a top priority.
Declining transportation revenues resulting from the weakened economy and the state budget shortfall have caused a reduction in ADOT's budget by nearly 25 percent this fiscal year.
Temporarily suspending operations at these 13 rest areas will allow ADOT to reallocate funds to ensure the safety of the traveling public by focusing on roadways first.
The status of these rest areas will be assessed in June at the end of the fiscal year.
More than a dozen non-ADOT owned or -operated locations throughout the state will remain open.
