ATRC
Research Program
The Arizona
Transportation Research Center (ATRC) is a catalyst for the continuous improvement of the
Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT). This responsibility includes the formal
development of a focused research program as well as providing the forum for improvement
through effective technology transfer, and fostering change in areas beyond the domain of
research. To accomplish this, ATRC uses the expertise of both public and private partners.
This includes the university system of Arizona and the consultant community.
Anyone may
submit a research proposal online using the Research
Suggestion Form, or send the printed form, available in Word and Adobe PDF formats, to the
address at the bottom. All research suggestions are evaluated by ATRC. Upon completion of
the ATRC evaluation process, the highest rated proposals are presented to the ADOT
Research Council for further evaluation and ranking. Proposals are funded to the extent
that funds are available, beginning with those rated highest by the Research Council.
ATRC project
managers oversee the research on individual projects. Each project manager supervises
research in one or two Emphasis Areas.
The actual research may be done by a private consultant, a university professor or a
college student. The projects are managed in accordance with the procedures
outlined in the ATRC Research
Program Manual. The ATRC also participates in several cooperative research ventures with
other states, federal agencies and private associations. The latest annual program
book gives the status
and budget of current projects.
Research
culminates in reports that are written according to published guidelines and distributed
by the ATRC. The report guidelines
(also available in Word
and Adobe PDF formats),
the latest catalog of reports, with instructions for requesting them, as well as some of
the reports, are on the web.
