Pima County Transit System
Pima County Department of Transportation is one of the largest transit systems in Arizona. Pima County Rural Transit service provides thousands of miles of support made up of four service areas. These include Ajo, operated by Ajo Transportation and Marana, San Xavier and Tucson Estates operated by TRAX Transportation. All Pima County rural routes provide connectivity to urban public transit services and airports. The Ajo Dial-a-Ride provides connectivity to the Ajo to Tucson route and to Mota’s Transport of Sonoyta, Mexico. The Ajo to Tucson route connects to Sun Tran in Tucson and provides direct access to Tucson International Airport by continuation service provided by a private contractor outside of the rural transit program.
A new route, providing service from Ajo - Gila Bend was added in April 2005. The service operates one round trip per day between Ajo and Gila Bend Monday through Friday. Those traveling between Ajo and Gila Bend (both directions) must make a reservation with Ajo Transportation. This reservation must be made at least one day in advance. This applies to ADA and non-ADA trips. To make reservations in Ajo: Local calls in Ajo: 520.387.6559 Toll free: 1.800.242.9483. Timed connections are also available in Gila Bend with Regional Public Transportation Authority (RPTA) for those traveling to and from Phoenix. The RPTA route makes 2 round trips per day Monday through Friday. The service stops in Gila Bend, Buckeye, Avondale, Goodyear, Tolleson, and Desert Sky Transit Center in Phoenix. The vehicles serving the route are 16 passenger minibuses that are lift equipped and fully accessible. Operators can deviate up to three quarters of a mile (curb to curb) from the route for passengers who are ADA certified. Reservations for ADA services can be made up to 14 days in advance and as late as 24 hours before departure. The Marana service connects with Sun Tran express and local services on Ina Road Northwest of Tucson.
