ATIS Roads Update - This is an on-going project and our most important work as it is the basis for all GIS work at ADOT. The ATIS Roads GIS coverage is the street centerline file. ATIS Roads has a linear referencing system (LRS) built on it for use in dynamic segmentation of the routes. In other words, ADOT data that is referenced by route and milepost can be "geocoded" to the LRS and displayed on a map. All data in ADOT uses the standard ATIS nomenclature for referencing location.

HPMS - This is the Highway Performance Monitoring System. It is a report that is submitted to the federal highway administration annually. This report contains valuable data on all the roads in our state. Some of this data includes traffic counts, functional road classification, ownership, surface type, etc. HPMS is primarily used as a planning tool by the FHWA as an aid for distributing funds and to determine the amount of federal funds that will be distributed to each state.

Functional Classification – The 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Act requires each state to functionally reclassify its public roads and streets. Classifications include Interstates, freeways, arterials, collectors, and local roads. Functional classification also plays an important role in the Highway Performance Monitoring System. ADOT acts as a liaison between local agencies and the Federal Highway Administration when requesting functional classification changes.  The MPD GIS team maintains the statewide functional classification system utilizing GIS.

Photolog - Photolog is a highly functional mobile mapping system and represents the department’s latest development in its continued effort to obtain an accurate and current inventory of its roadway corridors.  The data is collected using a van that is capable of capturing true hi-definition imagery from two vantage points, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, and highly accurate GPS information.  The van is driven on ADOT owned/maintained roadways annually and accumulates over 8TB of data.  This information is utilized throughout the organization and is particularly effective in assisting our Asset Management groups in obtaining a comprehensive inventory of all roadway features.  In addition, ADOT’s partnering groups utilize this data resulting in the realization of significant cost savings back to the department.
