Southbound Loop 101 closed between Indian School Road and Interstate 10 May 15-18 for start of system interchange project  

Northbound Loop 101 closed May 29-June 1

  •  Southbound Loop 101 will be CLOSED between Indian School Road and I-10 from 9 p.m. Friday May 15, to 5 a.m. Monday, May 18. The following ramps also will be closed:
    • The southbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Cardinal Way and Camelback Road
    • DETOUR: Drivers may consider exiting ahead of the closure and taking 91st or 99th avenues.
  • The northbound Loop 101 high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane between McDowell and Indian School roads will be closed from 5 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16.
  • The northbound Loop 101 off-ramp at Thomas Road will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday night, May 18, and Tuesday night, May 19.
    • DETOUR: Drivers may consider using the east- and westbound I-10 off-ramps at 91st or 99th avenues as alternate routes to access Thomas Road.

 

 UPCOMING CLOSURE

  • Northbound Loop 101 will be CLOSED between I-10 and Indian School Road from 9 p.m. Friday, May 29, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 1.
    •  DETOUR: Drivers may consider exiting I-10 at 91st or 99th avenues and traveling north to access Loop 101 beyond the closure.

ADOT advises drivers to use caution and be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through all work zones.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments, and in cooperation with the cities of Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale, Goodyear and Glendale, will be constructing improvements to the Loop 101/Interstate 10 system interchange. This project is included in the Regional Transportation Plan for Maricopa County and is funded through Prop 400, a countywide dedicated half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements approved by voters in 2004.

The purpose of the project is to:

  • Mitigate weaving movements for HOV traffic
  • Improve safety and traffic operations
  • Improve movement at traffic interchanges and surface streets
  • Accommodate future widening projects

Project Elements

  • A new Direct High-Occupancy Vehicle (DHOV) ramp within the existing interchange that will accommodate travel to/from the north along Loop 101 and to/from the east along I-10.
  • Widening of Loop 101 and I-10 to accommodate the new DHOV ramp
  • A new connection from the south to east freeway system ramp and 91st Avenue, called a ‘slip ramp.’
  • An extension of the southbound Loop 101 off-ramp at McDowell Road
  • Noise walls, where warranted
  • Possible minor right-of-way impacts

Schedule

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 and take approximately three years to complete.
