  • Westbound Loop 202 will be closed between Arizona Avenue and Price Road from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.
    • The westbound Loop 202 on-ramps at Cooper, McQueen and Gilbert roads also will be closed. 
    • The westbound Loop 202 ramp to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) also will be closed. 
    • DETOUR: Drivers may consider using Germann Road or Chandler Boulevard to travel westbound and reconnect with Loop 202, or use westbound Chandler Boulevard to access northbound Loop 101.                                                                                                   

Upcoming closures

  • Eastbound Loop 202 will be closed between Arizona Avenue and Gilbert Road from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12. 
    • The eastbound Loop 202 on-ramps at Price, Dobson and Alma School roads also will be closed. 
    • DETOUR: Drivers may consider using eastbound Pecos or Germann roads to connect with Loop 202 beyond the closure. 
       

Ongoing and upcoming lane restrictions

  • The right lane on northbound Arizona Avenue will continue to be closed between Willis Road and Loop 202 through Wednesday, Oct. 7. 
  • The left lane will be closed on northbound Arizona Avenue between Loop 202 and Willis Road from 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 9.
  • Southbound Val Vista Drive will continue to be narrowed to two lanes between Market Street and Loop 202 through Friday, Oct. 16. 
  • The westbound Loop 202 to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) ramp will be narrowed to one lane from 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, through Monday, Oct. 12.
  • NEW: The right lane on southbound Arizona Avenue will be closed between Pecos Road and Loop 202 from 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, through Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Overview

The Arizona Department of Transportation in collaboration with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has initiated a project to widen and make other improvements to the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Val Vista Drive in the city of Chandler and town of Gilbert.

The purpose of this project is to improve traffic capacity on Loop 202 to address growing traffic demands in the southeast Valley and relieve traffic congestion on Loop 202 during the morning and evening peak travel periods. Maricopa County is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States, with the population expected to increase by nearly 30 percent between 2020 and 2040. Traffic volume projections indicate congestion will worsen in the future due to growth in the region.

Project Elements

  • Adding two general purpose lanes in each direction on Loop 202 from Loop 101 to Gilbert Road
  • Adding one general purpose lane in each direction from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive
  • Widening exit ramps from one to two lanes
  • Adding noise walls in some locations
  • Widening overpass bridges
  • Reconstructing the eastbound Arizona Avenue on-ramp and bridge
  • Removing the existing asphalt pavement surface to improve existing pavement conditions and the driving surface for vehicles
