Current Studies Project Overview

ADOT continually plans for enhancements to the roadway once it is built and in use for maximum efficiency and safety. Various studies identify these enhancements and may influence additional planning, design and construction.

Loop 202 (Red Mountain and Santan Freeways) Gilbert Road to Interstate 10 HOV Lane Design Concept Report

As part of the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes will be added to the Loop 202 (Red Mountain and Santan Freeways) from Gilbert Road in Mesa to I-10 in Chandler. A Fact Sheet offers more information (file size: 530KB)

The HOV lanes are intended to improve traffic flow, encourage carpooling, and expand the regional transit network. HOV lanes are designed for vehicles carrying two or more occupants, certified alternative fuel vehicles (AFV), motorcycles, Valley Metro buses, and emergency vehicles. HOV lane restricted hours are 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. All vehicles may use the HOV lanes during unrestricted hours. The project will also include the construction of directional ramps connecting Loop 202 HOV lanes to US 60, Loop 101, and I-10.

Prior to design of the improvements, the Arizona Department of Transportation will complete a Design Concept Report (DCR) for this 39-mile project. The DCR develops approximately 15% of the preliminary roadway design and evaluates environmental issues, noise mitigation, and lighting to accommodate the new lanes. It is anticipated that the project will be constructed within the existing roadway right-of-way. Construction is scheduled to be completed in five segments from 2013 through 2025.
