  ADOT Hosts a Successful Opening Celebration for the Completion of the Red Mountain Freeway  
Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway)

An estimated 10,000 Valley residents joined ADOT to celebrate the completion of Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Proposition 300 on July 15, 2008.


The completion of Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway not only signifies the completion of Loop 202, it also celebrates Proposition 300, a half-cent transportation excise tax (or sales tax) Maricopa County voters approved in 1985 which made this and so many other transportation projects possible in the Valley.

Fun Freeway Opening Facts:
Over 400 participated in the 5k Fun Run.
Over 150 participated in the 5k Bike Ride.
A hotdog was served every 3.5 seconds.
The temperature in Mesa reached 103 degrees.
The newest portion of freeway is 4.83 miles.
Over 70 local businesses and organizations exhibited.

1985 Voters approved Proposition 300 half-cent sales tax increase to fund Regional Freeway System including the Red Mountain Freeway.
1988-1989 Design Concept Reports and state level Environmental Assessment prepared for the Loop 202 between Dobson Road and Baseline Road.
August 1994 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) approved for the Dobson Road to Country Club Drive segment.
Summer 1998 McKellips Road to Country Club Drive segment completed.
August 1999 EIS approved for Country Club Drive to Baseline Road segment; final design began.
Spring 2000 Final design of SuperRedTan Traffic Interchange began.
Fall 2001 Final Environmental Assessment and Design Concept Report submitted to Federal Highway Administration.
January 2002 Country Club Drive to Gilbert Road segment completed.
January 2003 Gilbert Road to Higley Road segment completed.
Fall 2003 Construction began on the SuperRedTan Traffic Interchange (US 60, Red Mountain Freeway and Santan Freeway).
Spring 2004 Final design of Red Mountain Freeway, Power Road to University Drive began.
November 2004 Maricopa County voters approved a 20 year extension of a half-cent sales tax until December 31, 2025, to fund a comprehensive package of transportation improvements as part of the Regional Transportation Plan. Funding for the plan, which includes $9 billion in regional freeway improvements in Maricopa County, became effective January 1, 2006.
June 2005 Higley Road to Power Road completed.
Summer 2007 SuperRedTan Traffic Interchange completed.
Summer 2008 Power Road to University Drive completed. Red Mountain Freeway complete.

We are working hard with our transit partners to implement the voters’ vision and are committed to quality, safety, open communication with our neighbors, and minimal inconvenience to the traveling public.
