Improvements
ADOT continually plans for enhancements to the roadway once it is built and in use for maximum efficiency and safety. Various studies identify these enhancements and may influence additional planning, design and construction.

Princess Drive to Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway)
General Purpose Lanes Study

Overview:
Design Concept Report/Environmental Study to add one general purpose lane in each direction on the Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) between Princess Drive and Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway).

Schedule: Study anticipated to be completed in late 2009

Interstate 17 to Princess Drive Freeway Management Systems (FMS) Modifications

Overview:

This segment will add Freeway Management Systems (FMS) modifications will include variable message signage and traffic monitoring systems to provide data to drivers. Ramp metering will be added to manage the flow of traffic entering the freeway. Other elements will include installing new bridge-supported sign structures and modifying a few sign structure supports in the median. Refer to the Map above.

Schedule: Construction between I-17 and SR 51 completed in fall 2009. Construction between SR 51 and Princess Drive anticipated to be completed in 2010.

Project: Loop 101 (Agua Fria/Pima Freeways)
Interstate 10 to Tatum Boulevard High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes


Overview:
The proposed project would construct High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on Loop 101 (Agua Fria/Pima Freeways) from Interstate 10 to Tatum Boulevard, as well as an additional general purpose lane on Loop 101 near the interchange with Interstate 17. The proposed project is approximately 30 miles and passes through the communities of Glendale, Peoria, Phoenix and unincorporated Maricopa County.

Schedule:
An environmental study and Design Concept Report for the proposed project is currently under way. Comments on the proposed project are due Nov. 27 for inclusion in the study. Construction of the proposed HOV lanes between I-17 and Tatum Boulevard is included in Fiscal Year 2013 of ADOT’s Five-Year Construction Program. Future phases would be scheduled upon completion of this study, based on available funding. Construction of HOV lanes on Loop 101 between I-10 and I-17 is currently identified in Phase III (2016-2020) and Phase IV (2021-2025) of the Regional Transportation Plan.

The proposed project would construct a general purpose lane in each direction on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) from Interstate 17 to Tatum Boulevard.

Schedule:
The proposed project is currently identified in Phase IV (2021-2025) of the Regional Transportation Plan.
