The most frequent questions ADOT has received regarding the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program are listed below.
- When does the application cycle begin?
Each application cycle begins in September. Selected projects will be announced in April the following year.
- How much funding is available?
There is approximately $5,000,000 available for Cycle 6. The maximum request/project limits will be $45,000 for non-infrastructure projects and $400,000 for infrastructure projects.
- What types of projects are eligible?
Applicants can apply for non-infrastructure and infrastructure projects in Cycle 6. Each of these will use separate application forms. Applicants may submit as many applications as they desire.
- How can I apply?

- Can I apply for more than one year of funding?
Yes. applicants can apply for up to three years of funding - for non-infrastructure projects only. However, if you do you can submit only one additional infrastructure application and/or only one additional non-infrastructure application.
- Are web resources available?

- What data collection is required?
If your project is selected, you will be expected to count the number of students walking and biking to school. You will submit this data to ADOT on a quarterly basis.
- How are projects selected/evaluated?
The SRTS Advisory Committee will review and recommend projects for funding, subject to approval by the State Transportation Board. Furthermore, local Councils of Governments and Metropolitan Planning Organizations will have the opportunity to rank applications from their jurisdictions.
