The Arizona Department of Transportation, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, is studying potential improvements at the intersection of US 60 (Grand Avenue) and Thunderbird Road/Thompson Ranch Road. This project will evaluate alternatives that would improve traffic flow. The maps shown below are examples of possible alternatives ADOT is exploring.

In 2008, ADOT prepared a report that recommended further study of top priority projects along Grand Avenue, including the Grand Avenue/Thunderbird Road intersection. It proposed that a study be completed to determine the intersection configuration that would accommodate growth and increased traffic volumes in this area.
In 2009, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) completed the El Mirage Road, Northern Avenue to Bell Road Final Design Concept Report (DCR). This DCR identified a concept for the Grand Avenue and Thunderbird Road intersection similar to the ADOT Feasibility Report concept.
$14.7 million has been identified by the current Five-Year Transportation Facilities Construction Program for fiscal year 2014 for improvements to Grand Avenue between Loop 101 and Loop 303. The results of current studies will be used to determine if this project will be funded in 2014.
The initial Project Assessment and pre-draft environmental assessment should be completed in summer 2012. Additional studies, design or construction of this project has not been scheduled.
The timeline represents the required steps in the development of a roadway or roadway improvement. In addition to establishing a funding source, there is a series of required planning and environmental studies before a roadway is constructed.
