Project Overview Closures & Restrictions
As a part of the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) constructed one new High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane in each direction on State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway) between Shea and Tatum Boulevards.

A concrete median barrier separates the eight miles of new HOV lanes, and concrete pavement overlaid with rubberized asphalt was laid to reduce traffic noise.

Two ramps, opened the week of January 19, 2009, now carry carpool lanes from northbound SR 51 to eastbound Loop 101 and from westbound Loop 101 to southbound SR 51.
