ADOT INVITES YOU TO ATTEND ROUNDIN' OUT THE RED MOUNTAIN

Roundin' Out Red Mountain
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will host Roundin’ Out the Red Mountain, a freeway opening event to celebrate completion of Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway).

Date: July 15, 2008
Time: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Opening Ceremony: 6 p.m.

The completion of this final segment between Power Road and University Drive in Mesa represents an important milestone in transportation improvements in the Valley including the completion of the Red Mountain Freeway, the conclusion of Proposition 300 projects and the successful partnership between taxpayers and ADOT spanning more than 20 years.

Proposition 300 is the state’s largest-ever public works project, building nearly 150 miles of new freeways and connecting communities in the Valley. Other Proposition 300 projects include the entire Loop 101 and State Route 51.

HOW TO ARRIVE TO THE EVENT

Participants are encouraged to arrive at the event from the south and west.

Public parking will occur on eastbound Loop 202, located at McDowell Road and Brown Road.

From Power Road, enter the event heading east on either McDowell Road or Brown Road. Public parking will open at 4 p.m. July 15.

Mesa residents and event participants should expect traffic delays in and around the event July 15.

ATTRACTIONS

All attractions will occur on the Loop 202 westbound lanes.

5k Bike Ride – bring your bike and meet near the McKellips Road bridge on Loop 202.

Ceremony – join Governor Janet Napolitano at the ADOT stage to celebrate the completion of Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and commemorate the successes of Proposition 300.

Hula Hoop Contest – bring your own Hula Hoop and join in Mesa’s largest ever Hula Hoop contest near the McKellips Road bridge.

5k Fun Run – put on your running shoes and participate in a 5k Fun Run near the McKellips Road bridge.

ADOT Video Interview Booth – tell ADOT what the opening of Loop 202 means to you at our Interview Booth near the Brown Road bridge.

ADOT Road Show – learn how a freeway is built at the Road Show near the Brown Road bridge.

Mesa City Hall on the Loop – visit with officials from the City of Mesa near the Brown Road bridge.

Exhibitors – peruse exhibits by local businesses and organizations.

HOW DO I LEARN MORE?

Visit www.azdot.gov/Loop202Opening for the latest event details.

Participants are reminded to take caution during periods of excessive heat; shade is limited at the event.

Participants are encouraged to wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes.

Water will be provided at the event, but participants are encouraged to come prepared especially when spending extended periods of time outdoors.

1985 Voters approved Proposition 300 half-cent sales tax increase to fund Regional Freeway System including the Red Mountain Freeway.
1988-1989 Design Concept Reports and state level Environmental Assessment prepared for the Loop 202 between Dobson Road and Baseline Road.
August 1994 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) approved for the Dobson Road to Country Club Drive segment.
Summer 1998 McKellips Road to Country Club Drive segment completed.
August 1999 EIS approved for Country Club Drive to Baseline Road segment; final design began.
Spring 2000 Final design of SuperRedTan Traffic Interchange began.
Fall 2001 Final Environmental Assessment and Design Concept Report submitted to Federal Highway Administration.
January 2002 Country Club Drive to Gilbert Road segment completed.
January 2003 Gilbert Road to Higley Road segment completed.
Fall 2003 Construction began on the SuperRedTan Traffic Interchange (US 60, Red Mountain Freeway and Santan Freeway).
Spring 2004 Final design of Red Mountain Freeway, Power Road to University Drive began.
November 2004 Maricopa County voters approved a 20 year extension of a half-cent sales tax until December 31, 2025, to fund a comprehensive package of transportation improvements as part of the Regional Transportation Plan. Funding for the plan, which includes $9 billion in regional freeway improvements in Maricopa County, became effective January 1, 2006.
June 2005 Higley Road to Power Road completed.
Summer 2007 SuperRedTan Traffic Interchange completed.
Summer 2008 Power Road to University Drive completed. Red Mountain Freeway complete.

We are working hard with our transit partners to implement the voters’ vision and are committed to quality, safety, open communication with our neighbors, and minimal inconvenience to the traveling public.
