Freeway votes are delayed

The Arizona Department of Transportation and its consultants haven't finished their freeway homework, pushing the South Mountain Citizens Advisory Team's long-anticipated vote on a West Valley alignment back another month.

The traffic report that team members expected to receive at Thursday's meeting wasn't finished, leaving the group with no data to discuss. Four other reports the team needs before making a decision are also incomplete or haven't been written. With the scheduled March 30 vote looking unrealistic, the group added two more meetings to review the tardy information. The vote is now scheduled for April 27.

The reports are written by ADOT's consultant on the project, HDR Inc., and then sent to ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration for comments and questions. The traffic report and another study on the freeway's secondary impacts are stuck in the limbo of that comment process, ADOT spokesman Matt Burdick said. Information delays have pushed the vote back several times in the past few months. ADOT has proposed connecting the western portion of the freeway to Interstate 10 at 55th Avenue, 71st Avenue or Loop 101.

The information gap was frustrating to some on the team.

"We've sat twice now and had them cry wolf that they had to get this wrapped up," said team member Laurel Arndt of Ahwatukee.
