Breast-feeding, freeway among hot Chandler issues in 2005

Whew! Did 2005 just zoom past in a blur, or what?

One minute we're watching a City Council chamber full of mothers breast-feeding their babies, the next we're listening to a roomful of Ahwatukee residents clamoring to stop a freeway. Then suddenly here we are, a year older but . . . wiser?

In some ways, our community is better off than a year ago. After all, the inalienable rights for babies to be fed has been established in Chandler. And a planned auto-mall expansion that had neighbors of Chandler-Gilbert Community College upset has been squashed. And not to be ignored, Chandler was named one of the country's top 100 cities for kids.

But other issues during 2005 turned into good news/bad news events, depending on a person's point of view.

South Mountain Freeway

Like it or not, the Loop 202 leg from Pecos Road and Interstate 10 to the West Valley is still in the planning, and actually a year closer to reality. And with the constant building of new homes in the proposed footprint of the freeway, sooner is better than later for a decision to be rendered.
