Stanton keeps constituents at top of list
The Arizona Republic, Oct. 2, 2004 12:00 AM
Phoenix Councilman Greg Stanton is keeping busy these days. When he isn't
pulling the South Mountain 620 development agreement out of the latest fire,
he's visiting with Ahwatukee Foothills residents about whatever crosses their
minds.
A Town Hall meeting this week gave residents a chance to question, compliment or
complain to Stanton. It's an annual get-together he holds to make sure the
people he represents know that he's there for them.
This year, the main thing on peoples' minds was transportation and development
bordering their community.
Stanton, who supports Proposition 400, said some of his constituents are
hesitant to vote yes to fund the South Mountain Freeway without knowing the
exact alignment. Many residents near Pecos Road, the originally planned route,
would like to see the freeway farther south.
"The message I want to get out is, this (Pecos alignment) is not a done
deal at all," Stanton said.
"By voting for Proposition 400 you are not necessarily voting to put that
on Pecos Road."
In his four years representing District 6, which includes the Arcadia
neighborhood as well as Ahwatukee Foothills, Stanton has shown himself to be a
tireless advocate for the citizens he represents. When he tells residents he is
opposed to the freeway going along Pecos, they can believe he'll do whatever it
takes to hold that ground.
