Project Summary
The Arizona Department of Transportation is adding 30-miles of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) from Interstate 10 to State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway). ADOT has already added more than 30 miles of HOV lanes to Loop 101 (Price Freeway) in the East Valley between Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) to SR 51 during the past three years. This project will allow over 60 miles of uninterrupted HOV access expanding the regional transit network.
In addition to HOV lane construction, three freeway bridges at 19th, 31st and 35th avenues will be widened to accommodate the expanded freeway, two new overhead message signs will be installed and the northbound Bell Road off-ramp will be lengthened to ease congestion.
What motorists can expect during construction
- A series of full freeway weekend-long closures are needed to establish the median work zone. Closure locations vary, but times are from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
- Reduced 55 mph speed limit along the entire Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway)
- Potential single and double lane closures during non-rush hour periods
- Potential crossroad closures at 19th, 31st and 35th avenues
News and Updates
Read the ADOT blog post for an explanation of why some HOV lanes appear to be completed but are not yet open.

The timeline represents the required steps in the development of a roadway or roadway improvement. In addition to establishing a funding source, there is a series of required planning and environmental studies before a roadway is constructed. More . . .
