ADOT is committed to keeping the public informed of upcoming closures with as much notice as possible.
On Monday morning, ADOT is scheduled to open two additional northbound lanes on I-17 between Loop 101 and Jomax Road -- marking the on-time completion of a two-year construction project to double the number of lanes along this stretch of I-17.
This is the first segment of new lanes completed as part of a massive $142 million project to reconstruct I-17 while adding two new lanes in each direction between Loop 101 and Carefree Highway.
Completion of new lanes between Jomax Road and Carefree Highway is expected by early 2010. A separate $11.2 million project to add a third lane in each direction along I-17 between Carefree Highway and Anthem Way is scheduled for completion this spring.
Continued lane and ramp restrictions will be needed to complete the remainder of the I-17 improvements.
Drivers should expect delays when traveling on I-17 while the following restrictions are in place and are encouraged to seek alternate routes when possible.

Union Hills Drive at I-17 - REVISED
Friday, Nov. 6 at 10 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 9 at 5 a.m.
Union Hills Drive at I-17 will be CLOSED from Friday night through Monday morning for work on the I-17 widening project. Eastbound traffic can use 35th avenue or the southbound frontage road to Bell Road and return to Union Hills Drive on the northbound frontage road. Westbound traffic can use 19th Avenue or the northbound frontage road to Yorkshire Drive and return to Union Hills Drive on the southbound frontage road.

Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10 p.m. through Sunday, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m.
Southbound I-17 between Pinnacle Peak Road and Yorkshire Drive will be CLOSED from Saturday night through Sunday morning for work on the I-17 widening project. Detour: Southbound traffic can exit at Pinnacle Peak Road and use the southbound frontage road to Deer Valley Road, then west to 27th Avenue to re-enter I-17 at Yorkshire Drive.

Both the northbound loop off-ramp and the southbound loop on-ramp at Carefree Highway are CLOSED for work related to the I-17 widening project. During the closure, drivers may use the other diamond interchange ramps.

The southbound on-ramp at Dixileta Drive is CLOSED for work related to the I-17 widening project. During the closure, drivers can use the frontage road to other ramps at Jomax and Happy Valley roads.

Loop 101 at I-17

The ramps from Loop 101 to southbound I-17 and from northbound I-17 to Loop 101 are restricted to one lane until late 2009 for construction activities related to the widening project.
I-17 at Deer Valley Road
The northbound I-17 off-ramp at Deer Valley Road is permanently closed to improve traffic flow on I-17 near the system interchange with Loop 101. Northbound I-17 traffic will exit at Rose Garden Lane and use the northbound frontage road to access Deer Valley Road. Ramps from Loop 101 will provide access to either northbound I-17 or Deer Valley Road as part of the completed project in 2009. View map

The I-17 frontage roads are restricted to one lane for construction of the new frontage roads and I-17 widening project. This restriction will be in place through late October.
Drivers should anticipate delays and allow extra time, or adjust travel to avoid closures and restrictions. ADOT appreciates your patience as we construct improvements on I-17.
While ADOT and its construction contractors strive to inform the public about planned freeway restrictions, during any complex construction project, there is always a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. During I-17 construction, plan ahead for unexpected restrictions - and remember to slow down in the work zone. The speed limit on I-17 has been reduced to 55 mph from Happy Valley Road to Carefree Highway for the project duration. The speed limit on the frontage roads has been reduced to 25 mph. The reduced speed limits are intended to protect you and your passengers, other drivers and workers in the construction zone.
