I17 Construction Schedule
In 2007, ADOT embarked on a massive I-17 expansion project between Loop 101 and Anthem Way in the north Valley to add new lanes, construct new interchanges and reconstruct outdated ones to improve freeway access. By early 2010, all new lanes had opened to traffic and the new and reconstructed interchanges had been completed. In spring 2010, the newly-completed lanes between Jomax Road and Anthem Way – as well as the existing lanes between Anthem Way and New River Road – were paved with a top coat of smooth, rubberized asphalt, when temperatures were ideal to complete this work.

Construction of all I-17 improvements between Loop 101 and SR 74 (Carefree Highway) are now complete. Here’s an overview of the projects and when they were completed:

Spring 2008

  • New interchanges at Jomax Road and Dixileta Drive completed

Fall 2008

  • Reconstruct existing interchange at Carefree Highway completed

Late 2009

  • New lanes opened from Loop 101 to Carefree Highway
(one general purpose lane, one HOV lane)
  • Deer Valley Road interchange improvements completed

Early 2010

  • New lanes opened from Carefree Highway to Anthem Way (one general purpose lane)

Spring 2010

  • All lanes paved with rubberized asphalt between Jomax Road and New River Road
  • New interchange at Dove Valley Road/Sonoran Boulevard completed
  • Initial interchange work at Lone Mountain Road (future connection to Loop 303) completed. The interchange is scheduled to open in 2012 as part of the current construction project to extend Loop 303 to I-17.
