State Route 74 (Carefree Highway) Traffic Interchange I-17 Improvements Map
Project Summary:

New partial cloverleaf interchange
Development Phase:

Under construction
Length: N/A
Schedule: Regional Transportation Plan Phase I (2006-2010)
ADOT construction began summer 2007 with anticipated completion by late 2009.

Budget:   $19.6 million (construction)

Project Details:

The traffic interchange at Interstate 17 and State Route 74 (Carefreee Highway) will be reconstructed to a new partial cloverleaf design to accommodate the widening of I-17 and improve traffic management. The interchange will include new diamond and partial loop ramp configurations. The partial cloverleaf design combines the benefits of a cloverleaf interchange with those of the standard diamond interchange that exists there today, and will include cloverleaf ramps for the two heavy left turn movements - for traffic exiting I-17 northbound heading westbound on SR 74 and for traffic heading westbound on Carefree Highway entering I-17 southbound - and turn lanes with traffic signals for the other turn movements.

A new two-span concrete girder structure will be constructed to carry SR 74 over I-17. State Route 74 will also be widened to three lanes in each direction.

The I-17/SR 74 traffic interchange has undergone some interim changes, including the addition of a temporary traffic signal system at each of the intersections where I-17 ramps connect with SR 74. In addition, more pavement was added along the northbound exit ramp and along westbound SR 74 to provide more room for traffic.

Traffic Management During Construction:

Substantial traffic control on I-17 and on SR 74 will be required to maintain traffic during construction. New traffic signals have recently been installed at the interchange for the existing ramp configurations.
