Ever wonder how the names of highways and freeways are chosen?
The Arizona State Transportation Board and the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names participate in a collaborative process to determine the names of highways. As part of the development and planning for the Regional Freeway System in the 1980s, a process was undertaken by the Arizona State Transportation Board, Maricopa Association of Governments and ADOT to identify names and numbers for freeways in the Valley.
Names for freeways and highways have been derived from geographic features and historical names identified with the regional location of the freeway or highway, such as Red Mountain and the Red Mountain Freeway in the East Valley or the Agua Fria River and Agua Fria Freeway in the West Valley.
