As the State Route 85 safety and enhancement project progresses in Gila Bend, the Arizona Department of Transportation will transition motorists onto a new, paved segment of SR 85 (Pima Street) at the Business Route 8 (Butterfield Trail Road.) intersection. Motorists have been traveling on a temporary detour road over the past few months while crews have been working to complete the improved segment of SR 85.
The switch has been rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon (January 17) instead of Wednesday. Motorists traveling northbound and southbound on SR 85 will be directed onto the new road. A temporary stop sign will be implemented for motorists travelling northbound on B-8 at the SR 85 intersection.
The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph in the work zone. Message boards will be in place to inform motorists of lane restrictions. Law enforcement will be on-site to monitor traffic enforce speed limit.
The $13.5 million project includes construction of a new, elevated intersection at SR 85 and B-8, a wider bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad, and realigning both SR 85 and Maricopa Road.
ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
