The rest area opened in 1970 and was originally designed to last 20 years without major renovations. ADOT has since identified parts of the rest area that need repairs and remodeling, including new water, sewer, phone and electrical services.
Sunset Point Rest Area has been closed in the past for temporary repairs. This project will allow ADOT to improve public health and safety on a more permanent basis.
On average, 3,100 vehicles and approximately 7,500 people visit the rest area each day. Other improvements that are part of the $5.2 million renovation project include:
- Two new picnic ramadas
- New sidewalks and landscape features
- New pavement, striping and signage
- Reconstruction of the parking lot to accommodate more traffic
- Construction of a new 60,000 gallon water tank and pump house
- New septic tanks
