SR 89 – REPAVING TO BEGIN SOUTH OF CHINO VALLEY

Bullet Monday, August 25th - mid September

ADOT will begin repaving a five mile section of SR 89.  The project will begin 10 miles north of Prescott and extend north to approximately one mile south of Road 4 South.  The work will consist of removing a layer of the existing pavement, repaving with rubberized asphalt and applying new pavement markings. There will be lane closures and slower speed limits, and motorists should expect delays of ten to fifteen minutes.  Flaggers, pilot cars and construction signs will help direct traffic through the construction zones with the aid of local police.

SR 89  – NIGHT WORK IN CHINO VALLEY TO BEGIN MONDAY

Bullet Week of August 25th

Crews will begin to work at night to facilitate future utility crossings.  Night work will take place periodically throughout the project to minimize traffic impacts between the hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and is anticipated to last through September 12.  There will be lane restrictions on SR 89 between Road 2 South and Road 4 South during the evening hours.  Flaggers will help direct traffic through these areas.

Improvements to the roadway are needed to increase mobility for motorists on the route and to provide better access to and from businesses along SR 89. The project is anticipated to last approximately 15 months.

This will be the first Construction Manager at Risk project to begin construction in Arizona. The Construction Manager at Risk project delivery method is designed to make construction more efficient, and save time from planning and design through the completion of construction. When the 'CMAR' has developed plans between 60-95 percent complete, he provides a guaranteed maximum price to build the project. If the price is determined to be fair, the 'CMAR' can begin construction activities on finished portions of the design to help save time.

Improvements to SR 89

  • The road will be widened from two lanes to four lanes.
  • Traffic signals will be installed at Road 2 South.
  • Road 1 South will be improved to allow for a future signalized intersection.
  • A roundabout will be built at Road 4 South.
  • Curb and gutter will be installed along the edge of the road, providing improved drainage for adjacent businesses.
  • A raised median will be installed down the center of the road to provide controlled left turns for safer access to businesses.
  • A new 18 inch ductile iron waterline will replace the existing 12 inch steel line under the road.
  • Install a 48 inch storm drain down center of SR 89 to improve drainage.

At this time construction will involve minimal traffic impacts as the majority of the work will be done off the roadway to construct the additional lane on the east side. ADOT has no daytime lane restrictions; some lane restrictions may occur during night work between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Construction will be divided into three phases. Phase one will run from August 4, 2008 through winter 2009. Phase one will include construction on the roundabout at Road 4 South, widening of lanes on the east side of SR 89 between Center Street and Road 4 South, widening of the west side south of Road 4 South, and installation of a new 18 inch ductile iron water main. Night work will be required to install some portions of the water main. Phases two and three will follow shortly after the completion of phase one. More information is available regarding construction area phasing.
