The Arizona Department of Transportation has started a project to improve State Route 87 between Payson and Pine which has been funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Crews are working on safety improvements and resurfacing the roadway with rubberized asphalt. Roadway safety enhancements will include upgraded guardrails, widened shoulders, widened roadway for turn lanes, extended box culverts for improved drainage and improved signage. Work began in June and is expected to be complete by early 2010.

This project includes two different segments where work is being conducted. Segment 1 is located near Payson between mileposts (MP) 254.62 and 255.94 and segment 2 is located near Pine between MP 265.61 and 266.69.
Current Activities on Segment 1
Work hours are between 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday. The roadway will be reduced to one lane as crews continue excavation in Segment 1. During work hours, a flagger will hold traffic until a pilot car can guide motorists safely through the route. In addition to pilot cars, message boards and temporary signage will be in place to assist in directing traffic. Delays can be expected of up to 30 minutes during peak travel hours. Please allow additional time to reach your destination.
Current Activities on Segment 2
Milling of the Shoulder
Crews will begin to remove a layer of existing asphalt from the shoulder of the southbound lane in Segment 2 the week of October 12 in preparation for paving operations. Although there are no lane closures or restrictions scheduled for Segment 2 the week of October 12, drivers are asked to use extra caution and anticipate brief delays through the work zone. Flaggers may be present to safely allow trucks and machinery to access the work zone.
Seeding Begins
Seeding of the east side of Segment 2 will begin on Tuesday, October 13. Seeding of shoulder areas limits the impacts of noxious weeds and invasive non-native plants, while restoring the landscape within and along the right-of-way.
Bradshaw Road Closed
Bradshaw Road is closed to traffic and is anticipated to open once construction on SR 87 is complete. Crews are excavating Bradshaw Road in order to align the new road with SR 87. This will accommodate the new turn lanes at Bradshaw Road. A clearly marked detour is in place to direct motorists to Old County Road just north of Bradshaw Road for access to businesses and residential properties.

Stay Informed Throughout Construction
ADOT strives to keep the public informed about construction projects, lanes restrictions, and closures. An electronic construction update is available for this project.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), working together with the town of Payson, is planning a modern roundabout at State Route (SR) 87 and Airport Road.
ADOT is in the very early stages of design and has presented this information to the elected leaders in Payson and residents of Payson.
The final design won’t be complete until late 2008; environmental clearances will be done in late 2008; right of way acquisition will be complete in early 2009; with construction beginning in summer of 2009 and completed by fall of 2009. The town and ADOT are sharing the cost of the roundabout.
