SR 260 - Western Drive to Thousand Trails

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) began construction in early February 2008 on State Route (SR) 260 from Thousand Trails to Western Drive in Cottonwood.

In the first thirty days, crews succeeded in clearing brush, removing culverts and excavating areas near bridges. There is minimal impact on traffic since all construction activity is off the roadway on the northeast side. At this time ADOT has no lane restrictions and is working closely with Department of Public Safety officers to control traffic near Thousand Trails. As crews progress toward Western Drive, motorists may experience some lane restrictions.

Construction trucks and equipment are entering and exiting the roadway throughout the work zone so ADOT would like to remind motorists to proceed with caution, obey all posted speed limit signs, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

When Ames Construction completes the $14 million project in about 18 months, the roadway will be a three mile long, four-lane divided highway that will improve traffic flow and increase safety for motorists.

The Prescott National Forest has asked ADOT to remind people of the closing of Forest Road 9606J which provides access to the Black Canyon River Access Site. The closure was made because Forest Road 9606J is in close proximity to the SR 260 construction zone. Signs and maps will be posted on all roads entering the closure areas.

If you would like more information regarding this ADOT construction project please call the toll free project hotline at 1.866.751.2083. For more information regarding the closure of Forest Road 9606J, please call the Prescott National Forest Service Verde District Office at 928.567.4121.

A brief history of the SR 260 plan:

  • Environmental documentation and Access Management Plan was completed in 2001.
  • ADOT and partners recognized significant changes in Verde Valley.
  • Process began in 2004 to update documentation.
  • Intensive public involvement in 2005.
  • Public Meetings on the projects began in July 2005 and continued into late 2007.
  • Safety was expressed as the number one priority by the community.
