Interstate 17

Paving Black Canyon Hill southbound from Sunset Point to Black Canyon City

On May 27, 2009, ADOT began a project to resurface and complete other improvements to the southbound lanes of Interstate 17 from near Sunset Point to Black Canyon City.  ADOT has completed paving of the southbound lanes of I-17 between Sunset Point Rest Area and Black Canyon City.  Although crews have finished paving; work on replacing guardrails through the project and seeding of areas adjacent to the highway continues.

Crews will resume nighttime work hours between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. Monday through Friday.  No daytime or weekend lane restrictions are scheduled at this time.  There will be intermittent lane restrictions during the nighttime work hours in which a pilot car will be in use to lead groups of vehicles down Black Canyon Hill. Large trucks will be required to perform a brake check at Sunset Point Rest Area.

Drivers are asked to use extra caution and anticipate minor delays through the five-mile work zone as the project continues.

Intermittent lane restrictions are anticipated as crews await the delivery of materials to complete the project.

Weekly construction eUpdates are available.

McGuireville Traffic Interchange Construction

The Arizona Department of Transportation began construction to improve the Interstate 17 and McGuireville Traffic Interchange in October 2008.  Work is underway and is expected to be complete in Spring 2010.  Improvements include:

  • Widening northbound and southbound I-17 between Mile posts (MP) 292.93 and 293.62.
  • Widening Dry Beaver Creek Bridges.
  • Replacing bridge decks.
  • Extending the existing entrance and exit ramps.
  • Constructing retaining walls.
  • Milling and repaving the roadway.
  • Replacing guardrails, signage, lighting, and pavement markers.

Lane closures and restriction on Interstate 17 through the construction zone are common as crews reconstruct the brides and entrance and exit ramps.  Speeds through the construction zone have been lowered to 45 miles per hour and are strictly enforced for the protection of other motorists and crew members.

ADOT is committed to the safety of the public during all construction projects and would like to remind the community that construction zones are not meant for pedestrians and bicyclists. Please do not walk, run, or bicycle near these areas. Please remember to drive slowly through construction zones to help keep the zone safe.
