Cold weather delays work on interchange at I-10 and SR 90, requiring restrictions to remain in effect overnight Monday

Ramp and lane closures are expected to remain in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday

December 06, 2011

Cold weather in Cochise County has caused a delay in work scheduled on Interstate 10 at the State Route 90 interchange near Benson, requiring a lane closure on westbound I-10 and two ramp closures connecting to the interstate to remain in effect overnight Monday (Dec. 5) and into Tuesday (Dec. 6).

The restrictions that will be in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday because of weather-related delays will be:

  • The westbound I-10 exit ramp onto SR 90 (Exit 302). Westbound motorists wishing to access SR 90 will be detoured to Mescal Road (Exit 297) where they may enter eastbound I-10 back to SR 90.
  • The right lane of westbound I-10 between Ocotillo Road (Exit 304) and State Route 80 (Exit 303).
  • The entrance ramp from SR 80 onto westbound I-10 (Exit 304). Motorists wishing to enter westbound I-10 will be directed to Ocotillo Road (Exit 304).

The Arizona Department of Transportation had planned to finish highway striping projects both east and west of the traffic interchange project as well as installing a barrier wall on the newly constructed westbound lanes of I-10, but cold weather and overcast skies prohibited the work from being completed on schedule. For the safety of motorists, the closures are being kept in place until the work is finished.

These delays also have pushed back the timeline for installing a temporary barrier wall on eastbound I-10 west of the SR 90 interchange. That work, which will require a one-mile lane closure beginning a mile west of Exit 302, has been rescheduled for Wednesday (Dec. 7) from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
